RIDGE TRAVERSING
AND PROGRESSION COURSE

Learn essential progression techniques to tackle ridge traverses with safety and autonomy.

This course is aimed at individuals who want to get started in ridge progression and learn to move safely and autonomously on adventure terrain. We will cover basic progression techniques, short-rope techniques, as well as other essential safety maneuvers, always accompanied by a certified guide.

What will we learn?

EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY

You will learn about the equipment required to progress safely along ridge traverses: ropes, slings, belay devices, and basic self-protection gear.

PROGRESSION TECHNIQUES

You will learn different progression techniques such as short pitches, dynamic belaying, and moving together (simul-climbing / short-roping).

BELAY STATIONS AND SELF-PROTECTION

We will work on mobile belay stations, installing protection points, and securing the line during progression.

TERRAIN READING AND TOPO INTERPRETATION

You will learn how to interpret guidebooks/topos, read the terrain, and identify the best line of progression during the route.

Información útil

Preguntas frecuentes (F.A.Q.)

What mountain or climbing level is required for this course?

You don't need a high climbing level, but you should feel comfortable moving through mountain terrain and have some prior experience doing hikes, gullies, scrambles, or similar activities.
The course is designed for individuals who want to learn to progress safely along ridges and easy-to-moderate terrain, as well as understand the logistics and basic maneuvers for these types of routes.
It is also a great option for sport climbers who want to start discovering a more alpine type of activity focused on mountain progression.

Will I climb with mountain boots or climbing shoes?

It depends on the type of ridge and terrain, but during the course, we will learn to progress using the most suitable footwear for each situation.
On many Pyrenean ridges, mountain boots or approach shoes are used primarily, as they allow for more comfortable and efficient movement throughout the day. However, for certain technical or specific sections, using climbing shoes may also make sense.
The goal of the course is precisely to understand when each option is appropriate and to learn to move safely and fluidly in this type of terrain.

What is moving together / short-roping (simul-climbing)? Will we learn it?

Yes. It is one of the most important techniques in ridge progression and alpine terrain.
Unlike classic multi-pitch climbing, where you usually advance from belay station to belay station, on many ridges you progress simultaneously over easier terrain to gain fluidity and time.
During the course, we will learn when it makes sense to use this style of progression, how to manage the rope between team members, and how to protect the line using natural features or quick placements when necessary. We will also cover when it is best to keep moving and when to stop and belay traditionally based on terrain and conditions.

What equipment is included, and what should I pack in my backpack?

We will provide all the technical and safety equipment required for the activity: ropes, slings, protective gear, and all other collective material.
You only need to bring your personal gear: harness, helmet, appropriate clothing, water, food, and mountain or approach shoes that you feel comfortable using on rocky terrain.
If you are missing any item like a harness or helmet, we can lend it to you without any issue.

What will we learn about ridge logistics and descents?

On a ridge, knowing how to descend and manage all logistics is just as important as the progression itself. During the course, we will learn to interpret the route topo, manage timing, navigate terrain, and make decisions based on conditions and team level.
We will also work on basic rappelling maneuvers and various techniques for handling descents or bailouts safely in this type of environment. The objective is to better understand how a full ridge day works, from the approach to the return.
